Last issue introduced South Africa’s unexplored nature. This issue continues to show you the lesser-known facts about South Africa and some of the country’s world firsts that may just surprise you.

  • The world’s first heart transplant was done in South Africa in 1967 by South African Dr Chris Barnard. South African physicist Allan Cormack had developed the algorithms that led to the co-invention of the CAT scan which is popularly used in hospitals worldwide to diagnose internal injuries and diseases.
  • The Kreepy Krauly, as well as the series of swimming pool cleaners that followed it, owe their existence to Ferdinand Chauvier, a South African hydraulics engineer who invented the automatic swimming pool vacuum cleaner. Grands Prix Formula One Ferrari cars owe their design to South African chassis designer, Rory Byrne. South African engineer EM Merrifield developed the first dolos which is used to secure the safety of thousands of kilometers of the global coastline. South African engineer George Pratley’s famous putty was used in the construction of the Apollo 11 landing craft which landed on the Moon the first time.
  • The world’s tallest hotel – Dubai’s Burj Al Arab (shape of a sailing yatch) the 321m tall feet of landmark was constructed by Murray & Roberts of South Africa. SABMiller, formerly South African Breweries, is one of the world’s largest beverage companies. The joint venture products which are sold in the Chinese market includes Snow, Zero, Singo, Shengquan etc.
  • At 216 metres, Bloukrans Bridge in the Eastern Cape is the world’s highest commercial bungee jump, which Table Mountain in Cape Town offers the highest abseil.
