Gandhi

Did you know?

We are sharing with you some surprising and unknown things about South Africa. Did you know about them:

Auction of the Old Summer Palace bronze heads is the recent controversial topic. In the same month, there is another auction which has aroused international attention. It was the auction of Gandhi’s belongings. Tracing back to his history, Gandhi has a very special relationship with South Africa.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2nd October 1869 to 30th January 1948). Being the Father of India, he was a major political and spiritual leader of India and the Indian independence movement. His "Passive Resistance Movement" or "Satyagraha", has led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world, such as his impact on the former South African President Nelson Mandela. This new style of politics empowered Gandhi followers to resist injustice in non-violent ways that demonstrate the superior morality of the protesters.

After he graduated as a lawyer in England, Gandhi was sent to work in South Africa in 1893. Gandhi first employed non-violent civil disobedience in the resident Indian community's struggle for civil rights. He led the South African Indian to protest peacefully against the white rulers in South Africa. During 1906 to 1913, he was jailed 4 times at the Old Fort Prison Complex in the centre of Johannesburg, commonly known as Number 4 (President Nelson Mandela was imprisoned in this jail in 1956). It was in Johannesburg that Gandhi’s main transformation from a shy and inexperienced lawyer to an extraordinary political leader took place. And it acted as the development of non-violent civil disobedience and the evolving philosophy of Satyagraha.

The Number 4 prison is altered into a museum called Constitution Hill. In 2006, it has established a new exhibition entitled Gandhi: Prisoner of Conscience, which focuses on the years Gandhi spent in the fast-changing frontier town of Johannesburg. For tourist who has interest in this part of the history could join a guided tour organized by the museum, which could introduce the philosophy of Gandhi, his years in South Africa and his influence in the recent history of the political revolution in South Africa.
