African-healer

Did you know?

We are sharing with you some surprising and unknown things about South Africa. Did you know about them:

There is an increasing concerns about the swine flu outbreak has developed to a looming pandemic. People worldwide are looking for different ways to boost their immune system; some may go for their cultural traditional way of healing.

Let's look at the old African traditional healer: A visit to the African Herbalist's Shop (also known as the Musemum of Man and Science) in downtown Johannesburg will be an enlightening experience for those who have used only traditional Western medicine when ill. Exhibits of skins, claws, wings and skulls jostle with the more mundane roots, bark, powders and potions which pack this shop. Consider the fact that there are over 200,000 African traditional healers in South Africa and you will realise that the muti sold in this shop is not an oddity, but the source of the majority of South Africans' healing supplies. Inyangas, or izinyanga, (herbalists) and sangomas, or izangoma, (diviners) use a huge variety of plants in their work. Some are used as charms - for example, as a love charm (Crabbea hirsuta) - or for strictly medicinal purposes. Wild ginger (Acridocarpus natalitius), for example, is used for coughs and colds. Apart from this shop, there is a flea market nearby selling all these healing supplies. A visit to the area is definitely a fascinating experience but not for the faint-hearted.
